Ghain project
GHAIN is a partnership between international organizations coordinated by Family Health International. The GHAIN partners combine leadership in cutting-edge science and clinical care with the proven ability to rapidly implement and expand large-scale HIV/ AIDS programs. The GHAIN team has the local experience and networks that allow the project to reach Nigerians at the community level, where HIV has spread beyond high risk groups and into the general population. Officially launched on December 1, 2004, the GHAIN Project is headquartered in Abuja, and has six state offices and a staff of over 150. GHAIN currently supports comprehensive HIV/AIDS services in Anambra, Cross River, Edo, Federal Capital Territory, Kano and Lagos and conducts community mobilization activities with faith-based organizations in Bauchi State. GHAIN will expand its activities to additional states throughout the life of the project. GHAIN’s initial efforts focus on state- and faith-based hospitals, whose wide range of services provide opportunities to reach at-risk members of the community coming in for other health care services. The project is also increasing the sustainability of state- and community-level health services and building strong referral systems between health facilities at all levels. GHAIN has built strong collaborative partnerships with more
than 120 organizations—public, private and faith-based—at
the community, state and national levels. GHAIN is strengthening
local organizations through technical assistance and training
in the areas of prevention education, behavior change, counseling
and testing, community mobilization and antiretroviral therapy.
Together with its partners, GHAIN is providing community-based
care and support for orphans, vulnerable children and people
living with HIV/AIDS. GHAIN’s interventions also address
the interaction between tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS. GHAIN conducts
rigorous monitoring and evaluation of programs to evaluate
their quality.
