Programs
Compass project
The
Community Participation for Action in the Social Sector Project (COMPASS)
is one of the largest integrated health and education projects in Africa.
With 51 community-led health and education initiatives in 5 states and
additional 6 for polio activities, COMPASS is laying the foundation for
sustainable improvements in reproductive health and family planning, child
survival, and basic education.
COMPASS operates under the belief that achieving sustainable
improvement is dependent upon giving Nigerians ownership of
the programs and initiatives that directly affect their health
and well-being.
Initiatives
- Improve quality of and access to reproductive health
and family planning services, child survival services, and
basic education (primary school);
- Support the Nigerian government in polio eradication
efforts;
- Build community acceptance and support;
- Build capacity and sustainability of local nongovernmental
organizations which support COMPASS initiatives;
- Mobilize communities to address their health and education
needs; and
- Create monitoring, evaluation, and information systems
for decision-making at community, local, and state levels.
Partners
The COMPASS Project is a collaborative effort of nine partner organizations
led by Pathfinder International.
The five US Partners include:
- Pathfinder International
- Creative Associates International, Inc
- Johns Hopkins University Center for Communication Programs
- Management Sciences for Health
- The Futures Group International
The four Nigerian partners include:
- Nigerian Medical Association
- Civil Society Action Coalition on Education for All
- The Federation of Muslim Women's Associations of Nigeria
- The Adolescent Health and Information Project
Goal
By the end of the project, Nigerians at the community level will
have the skills to be powerful advocates influencing health and education
initiatives in their communities in a manner appropriate to their values
and culture.
COMPASS Vision
Our vision is that mothers deliver babies safely;
those babies live well beyond their fifth birthday; men are
involved in the education and health promotion of their families;
and girls and boys equally acquire the literacy and numeracy
skills needed to lead Nigeria’s communities into the
future.
Geographic Coverage
COMPASS works in five Nigerian states: Kano, Bauchi,
Nassarawa, Lagos, and Federal Capital Territory, with additional
polio eradication activities in the six states of Jigawa,
Kaduna, Katsina, Zamfara, Sokoto and Kebbi.
Results
The Project will directly improve the health and
education of 18 million men, women and children in the target
areas representing 66 % of the total population in the five
states. Further, a number of interventions will be conducted
that will have an impact across the entire state such as radio
programming and training.
